General practice nurses celebrated at awards

General practice nurses celebrated at awards
06 February 2020

General practice nurses and health care assistants working in GP practices across Sheffield have been recognised for their inspirational commitment to patient care in an award ceremony this week.

The General Practice Nurse, Health Care Assistant and Practice Team Awards 2020 were developed by NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to recognise the often unsung work nurses and health care assistants do in primary care.

General practice nurses and health care assistants work in GP practices and are an essential part of the primary care team. They plan and provide nursing care, treatment and health education for patients of all ages.

Around 120 people attended the event that took place at Owlerton Stadium in Sheffield on Wednesday 5 February. A number of key figures in healthcare from across Sheffield attended to present awards alongside local patient representatives who attended to present the Compassionate and Caring Practice Team award.

Alun Windle, Acting Chief Nurse at NHS Sheffield CCG said: “The awards recognise the dedicated individuals and teams who work in general practice and each nomination we received is a testament to the extraordinary work that goes on in practices. This is the second year we have held the awards, we have developed them this year to add in an additional team category as we had so many nominations mentioning teams last year.

“It was an honour to present at the awards and to celebrate our talented general practice care nurses, health care assistants and practice teams and the difference that they make to patients in Sheffield.

“2020 is the Year of the Nurse and Midwife and this event has been an excellent start of many celebrations taking place throughout the year.”

There were 6 categories including; leadership in primary care, support and mentorship, commitment to general practice nursing, compassionate and caring practice team, rising star and inspirational health care assistant.

The shortlisted nominations highlighted a nurse dedicated to improving the lives of people living with diabetes, a practice team helping international students who have become new mothers to integrate into the community and a healthcare assistant goes above and beyond for patients.
