14/04/2023 - Increase in Luton’s electric vehicle chargepoints will improve access for all

£1.2 million from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles has been provisionally allocated to Luton Council to increase the number of publically available EV chargepoints in the town.

Supported by the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure funding, the council’s ambition is to increase the number of publically available chargepoints in Luton from 45 to over 200 by 2025. Increasing their number will ensure that Luton residents without driveways are able to charge a personal electric vehicle.

Enabling the use of electric vehicles in the town is the cornerstone of Luton’s ambition to be net zero by 2040. In partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, Luton Council published its EV Chargepoint Strategy in 2022, which sets out its approach to increasing the number charge points in the town.

Luton Council will now commence the procurement process, to be completed in 2023. The type and locations of new chargepoints will be determined upon completion of the procurement process.

Sue Frost, Service Director for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure at Luton Council, said, “Increasing the number of available chargepoints is crucial in ensuring that those without private driveways are not left behind. The government’s decision to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 means that more of us will be driving electric cars in less than a decade.”

“We must make it easier to use an electric car in Luton, which means that we must increase the number of chargepoints in our town. Working with government and the private sector to deliver reliable and accessible electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Luton is central to our vision of a net zero town by 2040.”
