Investigation Works Update 21 June 2021
Friston / Knodishall

Archaeology works will continue across the proposed substation land and to the east side of Grove Road, moving east towards the coast along the proposed cable route.
  • Excavation of trenches is taking place in fields 37, 50, 53, 57 and 58.
  • Backfilling is taking place in fields 34, 36, 39, 41, 43, 44, 45, 47, 49, 50, 53, 56, 57 and 58.
To support the works you will see a number of personnel and smaller vehicles on the site along with excavators used to dig and then backfill the trenches.

The following excavator movements are expected to take place this week. No traffic management is expected to be required for this movement.
  • Tthe B1122 Saxmundham Road access point on Tuesday and Thursday.
  • The northern B1069 access point on Friday.
  • Southern Grove Road access point on Thursday.
Works will be taking place on Saturday between the hours on 7am and 1pm.

Where trenches are being dug within 100m of properties, acoustic barrier fencing (either around each trench or along a field boundary) will be in place to help minimise noise from the works.

As core works are completed within an area, a smaller team will remain on site over the following weeks for final backfilling and remediation works, and cleaning of the site.

Shallow Geotechnical Surveys

Shallow geotechnical surveys undertaken from the Fugro Galaxy (pictured) will be commencing offshore from Monday 21 June and will continue until mid to late August.

These will take place across the East Anglia TWO, ONE North and THREE windfarm sites, as well as along the export cable routes for these projects and will consist of a series of Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) and Vibrocores being drilled to a depth of six metres below the seabed. Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) involve a steel cone being pushed into the ground while Vibrocores involve taking cores or samples from the seabed. The closest the boat will come to shore is about a kilometre off the coast.

ScottishPower Renewables has been granted the necessary marine licence for these works. The process of applying for a marine licence includes due consideration of potential impacts on the receiving environment and consultation via the Regulator (the Marine Management Organisation (MMO)) with those relevant technical advisors (including Natural England).

Site Investigation Works
Site investigation works, such as trial pits excavations, borehole drilling and infiltration testing has completed across the proposed cable route and substation site for the time being. However, the teams are due to return at different points later in the year to carry out works within the Leiston-Aldeburgh Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) or the Sandlings Special Protection Area (SPA). Additional areas may also be re-visted to provide a complete picture of data collected, this is to be confirmed.

Polite Notice
Please note that all survey activity is taking place on private land and activities are being undertaken under Construction Design and Management regulations and only authorised personnel with Construction Skills Certification Scheme cards can access these sites. Therefore, in the interests of health and safety and to avoid trespassing onto private land, anyone wishing to walk near the sites should remain on the public rights of way and should not approach any machinery or personnel.

If anyone wishes to comment on the works, please contact the stakeholder team via the project email address.

Field Spraying
There have been various reports of field spraying to remove vegetation/weeds. The onshore site investigation works are being carried out in agricultural fields within the onshore development area. These agricultural fields are all privately owned and all works are carried out with landowners consent. SPR have not sprayed any form of weed killer or requested the landowners to do so on our behalf.

Landowners are free to continue their land management practices such as weed control, which is a regular occurrence on agricultural land and not undertaken as a result of, or in relation to, the ongoing site investigation works. SPR ecologists are regularly surveying and monitoring the agricultural fields prior to the commencement of, and through the onshore site investigation works.

Thank you for your patience while we undertake these works. Please get in touch if you have any specific questions.
