Big Carl lifts again
Big Carl lifts again
The world’s largest land-based crane, Big Carl, lifted the second of three massive containment rings from the bunker it was constructed in to a lay-down area close by.

Now being prepared for the final lift into the first reactor building, the 17m-tall ring with a diameter of 47m was built 36% faster than the first by teams using the experience gained during the construction of the first ring.

You'll hear us using the term pre-fabrication a lot at Hinkley Point C, but you might not know what it means...

Pre-fabrication is the practice of assembling components of a structure in a factory, and in our case bunkers too, before being delivered and installed in its final destination. And it plays a big role on the project.

The approach provides many benefits including improvements to safety, quality and schedule.

The above-mentioned liner ring is just one example of pre-fabrication in practice.

Minister of State for Clean Energy & Growth visits Hinkley Point C
In April we welcomed Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, for a tour of Hinkley Point C.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “It was a pleasure to visit Hinkley Point C today to meet apprentices being taken on by EDF, showing the clear benefits the project is bringing to employment opportunities in Somerset and the surrounding area. As we work towards our world-leading climate targets, nuclear will continue to be an important and reliable source of clean electricity, and Hinkley Point C will play a chief role in delivering that.”

Supporting local charities
Donating to local charities
Each year, four local charities will benefit from the HPC Safe Way fund. The initiative encourages workers to behave with safety at the forefront of their minds, with every safe day and safe month achieved meaning funds for local charities.

The latest charity to be selected, St Margaret’s Hospice Care, will receive a donation of £5,150 to buy urgently needed end-of-life care equipment for their Taunton hospice.

Joanna Hall, the Hospice’s Director of Fundraising, said: “Thanks to your generous gift, we can now purchase vital equipment. This means patients are free to focus on what matters to them most during the time they have left with their loved ones. After such a turbulent year for the whole community these acts of generosity and support really mean everything to us.”
