April Project Update

Town and Parish Council Update April

It has been a busy month for the project, including the inaugural annual Sizewell C forum held in Ipswich, and the second Main Development Site forum held in Leiston. We have also completed the resurfacing of the B1122, carried out ecological works and taken further delivery of construction kit and equipment.

Forums
The first Sizewell C forum was held at Trinity Park in Ipswich. We had 100 attendees and it was independently chaired by Christine Abraham. There were updates and presentations from across the Sizewell C team, including Joint Managing Director, Julia Pyke, Head of the Regional External Affairs and Development, Marjorie Barnes, Head of Development Consent Order, Richard Bull, Site Operations Director, David Peacop and Site Delivery Director, Damian Leydon.

We also heard from Melanie Craig, the CEO of Suffolk Community Foundation who, outlined the process of administering the Sizewell C Community Fund. Attendees also included the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR), the Environment Agency, Suffolk Association Local Councils, Suffolk County Council and East Suffolk Council, with over 140 town and parish councils invited from across East Suffolk.

We held the second Main Development Site Forum on Tuesday (16th April), again independently chaired by Christine Abrahams, at the Leiston Town Athletic Association and around 50 people attended. We heard a project update from Marjorie Barnes and Richard Watler, Site Delivery Lead, and David Peacop gave an overview of completed work on the B1122 and the speed limits implementation plan. Dr Stephen Roast outlined upcoming marine activities.

The second round of Northern and Southern Transport forums will be held in May.

B1122 resurfacing works
We would like to thank the communities living along the B1122 for their patience whilst we resurfaced the road in line with our planning obligations. This road is the main access route to deliver the Sizewell C development until the Sizewell Link Road is open, expected in June 2027.

The work completed on schedule by 14 April. Whilst work was carried out overnight and because a road closure was necessary, we understand this did cause inconvenience to some residents which we would like to apologise for.

Ecology works including hedge trimming
We have conducted hedge trimming and coppicing in various parts of the Leiston area within the Sizewell C project boundary.

At the Ancillary Construction Area (ACA) on the land east of Eastlands Industrial Estate we carried out hedgerow coppicing and, where required, thinning on the Valley Road and Lovers Lane aspects of the site. This is in preparation for works on further access points to the ACA and also to create better visibility for HGV drivers to further ensure safety.

All works were overseen by an Ecological Clerk of Works and trimmings have been cleared from the highway and put back into the hedgerows to aid local ecology.

Bell mouth creation
From next week there will be works on Eastbridge Road at the Upper Abbey Farm Road junction to create a bell mouth entrance to the accommodation campus in the temporary construction area. This will include stone being delivered, which will be compacted along with plant machinery being delivered. The works will run 29th April for one week. The works will not require significant traffic management, other than intervals of ‘Stop’, ‘Go’ signs when deliveries arrive and / or leave site.

Further access will be created on Lovers Lane between 7th – 10th May to upgrade the existing bell mouth entrance to Wild Aldhurst (between Bridleway 19 and before the Recycling plant). During this time there will be traffic management in place when required (temporary traffic lights).

Wide and Abnormal load movements
There has been an increase in the number of Abnormal wide loads in the area as we bring in materials and equipment for site works. We keep our works tracker updated with all expected loads and you can find it here:

We also issue email notifications of expected loads. If you would like to sign up please email us at info@sizewellc.com or call 0800 197 6102.

Marine activity off Sizewell beach
We will be carrying out an unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey of the seabed ahead of the works that are required to be carried out as part of the construction of the power station.

These surveys will be conducted aboard the vessel FUGRO VALKYRIE, which will be using sonar equipment to scan the seabed in order to identify any UXO. These works are vital to help the design of the works required to construct the jetty for site logistics, as well as identifying the locations for the bore holes. The bore holes will be drilled to support the design of the offshore works.

These surveys will commence on 20 April 2024 and will take place seven days a week over a six-week period, during light hours, weather permitting.

Hinkley Point C socio economic report
Our sister project, Hinkley Point C in Somerset, has published its latest socioeconomic report. Key achievements include training more than 8,000 people in Hinkley Point C’s new Centres of Excellence, with almost one third of those being trained coming from some of the most deprived areas of Britain. 1,320 apprentices have been trained so far. The area around Hinkley Point C has seen a 25% growth in younger people aged 25-39. Productivity in the local town of Bridgwater is now 10% higher than surrounding towns.
