Our future workforce - developing new roles

"We need to be training the workforce of the future otherwise we’ll never solve the challenges we have today” (feedback from a member of staff during a recent drop-in session).

Our proposals for clinical change have been developed by clinical teams and shaped by our ongoing engagement with staff. The teams we are working with have lots of ideas for new and different roles that could help to make up our workforce of the future. For example, we are...

Theatre Workshop – ideas for our future workforce
In late November, we held a virtual workshop with members of staff from our Theatre workforce, health partners and education and university representatives so we could gather ideas around recruitment, retention, training and growth.

Changes that have taken place so far were discussed, such as supporting Health Care Assistants (HCAs) to achieve relevant qualifications. This has helped to grow our workforce of HCAs and provided opportunities for career changes for many.

We are working to:
  • Create defined career pathways for roles of all bands
  • Develop clear routes for career progression
  • Consider how we can provide further training opportunities for staff to grow their skillsets
  • Design career frameworks that align with roles
Themes included a need for roles with clear pathways, alternatives to University study such as apprenticeships and routes straight out of secondary education to provide employment and training opportunities for the younger generation.

It was also recognised within the session that the average age of a nursing student is 29, reminding of the importance of focusing on providing defined pathways suitable for career changes in adults also.
Consultants Conference Feedback
In September we held a workshop at the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust annual joint Consultant Conference to update consultants on the work of the programme and gather their feedback.

A total of 173 consultants attended the conference. We asked them what more could be done to make the most of new roles within services and collect ideas on workforce transformation.

The session covered areas such as new ways of working, staff wellbeing, recruitment, workforce shortages, finance and geography.

Key themes within the feedback included:
  • Diversifying the workforce
  • Improving the flow of HR services (to make it easier for people to work across multiple organisations and/or move around the system more easily)
  • Communication and transparency between non-clinical and clinical staff
  • Reducing barriers to open potential opportunities
“Share the vision - have a clear picture of what we are aiming for together”

We continue to listen to all of our staff, if you have anything you would like to feedback to the HAS team or ask a question please complete our online form, alternatively please email hasr@humberandnorthyorkshire.org.uk

Can you help?
We have been listening to feedback and ideas from people across the Humber over the past 18 months and these have really helped to influence our emerging ideas.

As we develop these ideas for how services could look in the future, we will be continuing to reach out to particular groups within our community, to help us better understand how they may be impacted by any potential changes to acute hospital services. Throughout our work we are seeking to listen to all communities and individuals and reduce health inequalities in the Humber area.

The groups we would particularly like to engage with include:
  • People living with serious and enduring mental illness
  • People living with poor mental health, including parents and carers.
  • Adults and children with learning disabilities or difficulties, including parents and carers.
  • People from black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds
  • People who identify as LGBTQ+
  • People affected by homelessness.
How can you help?
  • Do you work with or support any of these groups, or know someone who does?
  • Do you know of any pre-existing groups we could attend?
  • Would you like to be involved and represent the voices of the people you work with?
If you answer 'yes' to any of the above, then please click here to register your interest in hosting or supporting a focus group or other engagement activity over the coming months.
