August 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to the latest edition of our NHS South Yorkshire Public Membership newsletter. I wanted to start this edition just by saying thank you.

On the 1 July we celebrated our first anniversary as the NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) and I’m really pleased that during that time we’ve had the opportunity to hear from 1000s of people who live in our South Yorkshire communities. Whether that’s been as part of conversations we’ve been having about our new Integrated Care Strategy, our NHS Joint Forward Plan, GP practice changes in Sheffield and Doncaster or various other conversations, hearing from you is such an important part of what we do because we know that we need your help to make sure services are right for South Yorkshire’s communities and contribute to your improved health and wellbeing.

So thank you for your ongoing support. Being part of our membership is being part of the conversation, whether you’re still in the listening stage or you’re actively participating, we value hugely the fact that you’ve taken the time to sign up to our membership and read our bulletins.

We’ve recently refreshed the involvement pages of our website and I’d really recommend you have a look. There are some great examples on there in our Involvement Annual Report about the different ways we’ve held conversations with our communities in the past year, and also it’s where we always put the feedback that we receive from people and what we do with it so it’s a great way for you to find out what your feedback has influenced. It’s also of course, alongside this bulletin, where you can find out more about how you can get involved in our work.

We’re shortly going to be inviting people to get involved in another conversation about refreshing our Start with People Strategy. The Strategy is already on our site and there’s an email address to send any comments to if you wanted to get ahead of the game.

The final thing I wanted to mention this edition is some exciting work taking place with the many involvement colleagues who work across South Yorkshire to look at developing an insights bank for South Yorkshire. An insights bank is an online platform where we can host all of the anonymous feedback the many agencies who talk to citizens all the time gather. It banks it in a format that all partners can access easily and is designed to give us immediate access to things our citizens are telling us to help shape our work. I think this could be a game changer in stopping our citizens feel like they get asked very similar things, pretty regularly, by different or the same organisations. I for one am excited to find out more about this as it develops.

We’ve got some exciting opportunities in this edition from us and our partners, I hope you find something within it that really makes you want to get involved and I look forward to reading your feedback!

Best wishes,

Gavin Boyle

Opportunity to improve access to cancer screenings for people with mental health needs
sheffield flourish 2
People with severe mental illness are more likely to not participate in healthcare screening programmes. Some studies suggest that in particular adults with severe mental health problems are more likely to die from cancer under the age of 75 than people without mental health illness.

Sheffield Flourish is a charity based in Sheffield that works collaboratively with people who’ve experienced mental health challenges and they are working in partnership with Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield African Caribbean Mental Health Association to understand and improve access to cancer screenings for people with mental health needs.

The charity is running some co-productive sessions with people with lived experience of mental ill-health, to explore peoples understand, narratives and fears of screen for cancer. The sessions welcome people from all backgrounds. Sessions will be friendly, transgender inclusive and creative. All participants will receive £25 as a thank you for taking part in each session.
