There is still time to have your say – seven weeks to go
Have you had your say yet?
There is still nearly seven weeks to go before the public consultation on our proposal to change how some complex services are delivered to people in Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole closes.

Still seven weeks for us to ensure that we are providing an opportunity for us to listen to what people have to say. To help with that we have organised three more exhibition events in December:
  • Monday 4 December, 12 noon-3pm at Scunthorpe Central Library
  • Thursday 7 December, 12 noon-3pm at Morton Village Hall, Gainsborough
  • Saturday 9 December, 10am-2pm in St John’s Market, Scunthorpe.

Drop-in sessions taking place over the coming weeks
The team will also be out and about throughout November, meeting local people and promoting the consultation, including:
  • Tuesday 21 November (12noon-2pm) – Brigg Garden Centre
  • Wednesday 22 November (10am-noon) – Centre4 in Grimsby
  • Saturday 25 November (12noon-2pm) – Scunthorpe Christmas Market Event, St John’s Market, Scunthorpe
  • Tuesday 28 November (2-4pm) – Asda superstore, Burringham Rd, Scunthorpe
  • Wednesday 29 November (11am-1pm) – Louth Library
Please do come along and if you can, please let people know where they can go to have their say.

There is also still time to sign up to our online event on Wednesday 6 December, 6.30 – 8.00pm. Join our online discussion event, click here to sign up.

Talking to people in our local communities
A message from Alex Seale and Dr Kate Wood
Alex Seale, North Lincolnshire Place Director, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB, said: "It's been great to talk to people about this proposal over the last seven weeks; there's another seven weeks of the consultation to go and I would encourage anyone living or working in northern Lincolnshire to attend one of the in-person exhibition or drop-in events, or join the online discussion, if you haven't already had your say.

"We are keen to emphasise that the services we are considering changing are primarily for patients who need more complex emergency diagnosis, treatment and care after receiving an initial assessment through one of our Emergency Departments (A&Es) in Scunthorpe or Grimsby."

Group Chief Medical Officer for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, Kate Wood, added: "The vast majority of patients who use our hospitals would continue to be seen and treated in the same hospital they are now (around 400 a day who need urgent and emergency care and more than 1,300 a day with planned appointments or operations).

"Those who have a more complex medical need would be treated in Grimsby and would arrive in an ambulance or be taken by free inter-hospital transport if they have received their initial medical assessment at Scunthorpe.

"The proposed change – if implemented – would impact around 14 patients each day, though we anticipate the number of patients affected to be lower in the longer term as services adapt to new and improved ways of working.

"We would also like to stress that if the change is implemented, people would still take a poorly child to the same local hospital as they do currently – 24/7 Emergency Departments (A&E) and Paediatric Assessment Units (PAU) would continue to be delivered at both Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby and Scunthorpe General Hospital."

Has this model you are suggesting been set up in other areas of the UK?
In developing the proposal, we looked at examples from other hospitals around the UK – taking ideas from changes that have been made elsewhere and thinking about how they could work in our local area. The models have been adapted to meet the specific needs and challenges of the population that we serve in Northern Lincolnshire and parts of East Yorkshire.

Similar changes – where certain specialist services are brought together in one hospital – have also been made locally, for example, stroke services, which were consolidated at Scunthorpe Hospital a number of years ago. Care for patients following the initial onset of stroke symptoms is provided at Scunthorpe Hospital in the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) for the whole of the Northern Lincolnshire population. This change improved outcomes for people having strokes in the local area. This would not be affected by the proposed changes and hyperacute stroke services would continue to be provided at Scunthorpe General Hospital.

All over the UK now specialised services are being organised and delivered from hospitals that may not necessarily be the closest, for example, stroke services, cardiac services (heart attack emergencies), orthopaedic services and trauma services. This way of working is saving lives, allowing staff to develop their skills and recruiting more staff to specialised services.
