January 2019
Happy New Year from MIDAS, in what promises to be another really exciting year for Greater Manchester.

Having had the excitement of the opening of the GEIC (Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre) and launches of new air routes to Mumbai and Addis Ababa at the end of last year, 2019 will see more exciting developments in the city region, from great cultural and sporting events such as Manchester International Festival and the Cricket World Cup this summer, to major infrastructure improvements such as the first phase of the redevelopment of Manchester Airport, Pier 1, coming online in the Spring.

March will also see the Local Industrial Strategy for Greater Manchester presented to central Government, setting out and agreeing where Greater Manchester will help drive UK growth and the 4 “Grand Challenges”, through its own internationally significant specialisms, once again demonstrating the pioneering and progressive spirit that has made this city region a global centre for innovation.

All of these things make Greater Manchester an exciting place to be and, as importantly, a place which is easy to get to. There are already some interesting and high-profile investments coming in to the city region – as you will read about in this month’s newsletter below – and there is also an ambitious programme of national and international promotional activity and events that we will be delivering, which we hope will give you some interesting opportunities to work with MIDAS.

So, please continue to subscribe to MIDAS newsletters - I hope you’ll find them useful and informative. Furthermore, if you are involved in or are aware of a potential inward investment project that we can support with, please contact the team.

£60m GEIC reaffirms Manchester’s place at the centre of global 2D materials research
The £60m Masdar Building which houses the Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre (GEIC) has officially opened for business, providing a worldwide focus for the commercialisation of “wonder material” graphene and other 2D materials.

At just one atom thick graphene is the world’s thinnest material but is many times strong than steel, both thermally and electrically conductive and transparent.

Part of a £300m+ investment in 2D materials infrastructure in the UK city of Manchester - where graphene was first isolated in 2004 -  the GEIC’s launch to global innovators included a showcase of existing and future technology, and workshops to demonstrate the incredible potential for products enabled by 2D materials.
