ICS five-year plan: We'd like your feedback
Men exercising
South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System – which is working to join-up and improve healthcare services across the region – has unveiled its priorities for the next five years and is seeking feedback on the proposals.

Sir Andrew Cash, Chief Executive of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw ICS, unveiled the draft plan at the Guiding Coaltion event earlier this week at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.

The event was a chance for all ICS partners to contribute to the draft plan and get together to discuss how the ICS progresses its work in the future.

Sir Andrew is asking all those who contributed to the strategic plan - including patients and stakeholders – to share their views on the draft and highlight any other areas they feel should be taken into consideration.

Sir Andrew said: “I’m delighted to be outlining our new, draft, five-year plan. "This plan recommits our ambition for everyone in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to have a great start in life, supporting them to be healthy and live longer while aiming to be the best delivery and transformation system in the country.  It’s important that we listen to the people who use health and care services, so we are asking members of the public, patient groups and other partners and stakeholders to share their feedback with us.

“We want to know if they think we have got our key priorities right and also whether they think we have missed anything.”

"We want to ensure that everyone living within South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw has the best possible start in life with support to be healthy and live well for longer.”

Suicide prevention the theme for this week's World Mental Health Day
mental health day
Suicide prevention experts at South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System are urging members of the public and NHS staff to take part in suicide prevention training this World Mental Health Day – Thursday, October 10.

The theme for this year’s annual WMH awareness-raising day is suicide prevention, which remains a global challenge. Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death, globally for people of all ages.  It is responsible for over 800,000 deaths, which equates to one suicide every 40 seconds.

The population of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System (SYB ICS) (Barnsley, Bassetlaw, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield) is around 1.5 million people, and the suicide rate in the region has been identified as slightly higher than the national average of 10 suicides per 100,000 population, at 10.4.

To tackle the issue, SYB ICS has received over £1 million in transformation funding to reduce the number of suicides by 10 per cent by March 2021 and is working with partners in the NHS, local authorities, South Yorkshire Police and the third sector to improve mental health services through a variety of approaches.

Staff at the ICS and members of the public are being encouraged to take part in the Zero Suicide Alliance’s online training session, which teaches people how to have difficult conversations with those whose mental health they are concerned about – from relatives and friends to colleagues, neighbours and strangers.

Diane Lee, chair of the suicide prevention group at South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System, said: “No suicide is inevitable and all suicides are preventable.  Everyone has a role to play. You can raise awareness about the issue, educate yourself and others about the causes of and warning signs for suicide and show care and compassion for those who are in distress in your community.

“Just having a conversation with someone who is going through a difficult time can make the world of difference and we are urging everyone to step up and do their bit this World Mental Health Day.”

Coproducing the Autism Pathway
Rachel Gillot at the event
People with autism and their families took part in a workshop at Rotherham United Football club on World Mental Health Day.

The event - Coproducing the Autism Pathway for the ICS - was organised by South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System to give those with autism and their carers the chance to work with representatives from the NHS, social care and the community and voluntary sector to design and improve the support they receive. Taking a Q approach to queue-busting for outpatients
Nurse with patient
Waiting for an appointment is recognised as one of the most frustrating parts of being referred to hospital for a consultation in an outpatients’ clinic.

It could be a matter or days or weeks – either way life is in limbo until you get a letter on the doormat. But does it need to be this way? Does every outpatient appointment have to involve a face-to-face consultation, or can technology provide a solution?

An Innovation Collaborative involving Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network is exploring new ways of enabling outpatient appointments that both meet the needs of people referred to hospital and those of clinicians battling with the challenges of rising demand.

The Trust has identified the three specialities with the longest waiting times and the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN is now working with its network of creative and ingenious innovators to identify and evaluate potential solutions using Quality Improvement measures.

Aejaz Zahid, South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System (ICS) Innovation Hub Director, commented: “The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Innovation Hub team feel that there is real potential in the virtual outpatients project and we are working with Barnsley Hospital and the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN to support it.”

The project has been shortlisted for the final round of Q Exchange 2019 and is calling for support for this innovative work. Q Community members can support the application by voting here before the deadline of noon, Monday October 21, 2019.

Barnsley Hospital is part of South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw ICS. This ICS has developed an Innovation Hub with Yorkshire & Humber AHSN that will benefit from the lessons from this project and can transfer them across a system that covers a population of about 1.5m people.

This will provide critical lessons for the rapid uptake of innovation, a key element of the Long-term Plan, that can be utilised by the national AHSN network and all the organisations it supports across England.

latest news
Here's a round up of the latest news from our partners across the ICS.

Organisations who took part in Child Health Day last month have been thanked for their support. The inaugural Child Health day on September 9 was held to raise awareness of children’s health issues.

Around 120 people and organisations pledged to change their behaviour in support of improving children’s health. They included NHS organisations, committees, research groups, individuals, royal societies and colleges, campaign groups, charities and associations – spanning the nation from Truro to Glasgow.

The organisers said: "Thank you for being a part of this event - the first of many Child Health Days which aim to work towards giving children a healthy and happy future. Next year we will be reaching out to share more stories of work being carried out to improve children’s health and helping to get influential voices heard – please share with your friends, family and colleagues so we can make Child Health Day 2020 another fantastic day for children’s health. We will be in touch and if you’d like to be actively involved in planning for 2020, please get in touch."
